Hi from Shropshire

Post by smileysal on Wed Jul 06, 2011 6:54 am

Hi guys, having just been adopted by a Blue Fronted Amazon (!) I was searching for info and found this site. Very Happy
Coco is approximately 5 yrs old and sex is TBC by DNA test in the very near future, although I'm thinking prob girl!
The vague history I know is that Coco was unable to stay with her original female owner and went to a friend of hers who also could not keep her and she ended up at friends of mine as a stop gap.
I get the impression Coco has been trained to some extent but has not been handled for quite some time (except to have her claws clipped!) making her nervous to come to hand.
She has only been with us for 3 days but is already progressing well at coming for a treat and I think getting the hang of the clicker. But she will not come near unless there is a treat in hand and if the other hand is also there, but still, she will not approach.
If I just put my hand in the cage however slowly without a treat she will climb up to the top of the cage, not distressed, just deliberately moving away!
Now she is getting the hang of the clicker/treat thing I am trying to introduce target training as of yesterday which is having the same effect as my empty hand at the moment. Any tips would be gratefully received!
In addition to Coco we have around 300 other birds, including many rare breed chickens, ducks, geese pheasants, turkeys, a pair of rhea, a barn owl and a house goose called Jack!!!
I look forward to chatting with you guys and letting you know how Coco gets on!

great to hear about Coco and your birdie family, you are obviously kept very busy with that lot!

Sounds like Coco is settling well, just give him time after all he's been from home to home and needs to know he's secure in his forever home.

He looks very handsome. My B/F is 27yrs old now, hates hubby, he's really my bird.

Welcome to the forum, Coco sounds like she`ll settle in given time and is learning fast already.

I`m sure you`ll find a lot of information on this forum.

We sell a lot of the clickers, I think they are really good for teaching birds and gaining their trust.

Would love to see pictures of the rest of your family Smile

Scarlett x

Welcome to the forum! A diary would be really interesting as Coco has only been with you three days, and would probably be invaluable to people taking on a nervous bird to show that in time, there IS progress. You're house sounds mad, I met some Rhea recently and they reminded me of the Raptors off Jurassic park, everytime I turned to look at them they stood still, so I'd turn away, turn back and they were stood still again. Two foot closer to me ;D. Sounds like Coco is slowly coming out of her shell.
